ABSTRACT

Purpose:

To compare the effect of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (mit C) on corneal hysteresis (CH) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG).

Material and Method:

21 eyes of 21 patients with PXG (12 male, 9 female, mean age: 67.8±5.6 years) and 20 eyes of 20 patients with POAG (12 male, 8 female, mean age: 66.7±6.1 years) were included to our prospective study. All of the eyes undergone trabeculectomy with mit C. CH was measured preoperatively and at the first postoperative week and month by using ocular response analyser (ORA). The differences of CH pre and postoperatively between the groups were analyzed statistically by using Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon and chi-square tests.

Results:

There were no statistically significant differences in CH (p=0.12), corneal resistance factor (CRF) (p=0.054), corneal compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) (p=0.16), and Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg) (p=0.07) between PXG and POAG cases preoperatively. In both PXG and POAG cases, the mean CH increased significantly at the first postoperative week and month (POAG: 1st week p=0.01, 1st month p=0.001; PXG: 1st week p=0.01, 1st month p=0.001). No statistically significant differences were found between the changes of preoperative and postoperative mean CH values between the two groups (1st week p=0.88, 1st month p=0.084).

Discussion:

In spite of the significant increases in CH at the first postoperative day and month in both POAG and PXG cases, there were no significant differences between the changes of preoperative and postoperative mean CH values between the two groups. The postoperative increase in CH in POAG and PXG cases was thought to be correlated with the decrease in intraocular pressure. (Turk J Ophthalmol 2012; 42: 429-33)
