ABSTRACT

Purpose:

To evaluate the results of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in pediatric population.

Materials and Method:

PPV was applied in 14 eyes of 14 pediatric patients whose agerange 2 to 15 aged (mean 10,2) for posterior segment complications of trauma (n=9) and anterior segment surgical intervention (n=5). Silicon oil (n=10) or C3F8 (n=1) was used as endotamponade. Anatomical and functional successes were evaluated.

Results:

The mean follow-up was 10 months (range 3-15 months). Final visual acuity wasor better in 3 (21%) eyes, finger counting in 4 (36%) eyes and hand motions in 3 (21%)eyes. One eye lost light perception in during study period. Visual acuity could not be assessed in 3 patients. Reoperation was conducted in 3 eyes with unsuccessful initial PPV. Anatomical success was obtained in 8 (57%) eyes at the last follow-up. Elevation of intraocular pressure was seen in 5 (35%) eyes, ocular hypotonia in 3 (21%) and keratopathy 3 (21%) eyes.

Conclusion:

Functional success was limited despite higher rates of anatomical success even with single or multiple operations in pediatric patients with posterior segment pathologies that can also show recurrences.
