ABSTRACT

Pur­po­se:

To compare the topographic, biomechanical, and thickness properties of corneas of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and of healthy individuals.

Material and Method:

In this prospective, cross-sectional, and comparative study, 28 healthy individuals (control group) and 28 patients with AD (study group) were enrolled. Corneal topographical measurements using Scheimpflug camera with a Placido disc topographer (Sirius), corneal biomechanical properties using Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA), and central corneal thickness (CCT) using ultrasonic pachymeter were obtained for each participant.

Results:

Topographic parameters were not significantly different between both groups (p>0.05). Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were found same in both groups. CCT measured with ultrasonic pachymeter was significantly lower in patients with AD compared to health controls (p<0.05).

Dis­cus­si­on:

No significant difference was found between patients with AD and age-matched healthy individuals regarding the corneal topographic findings and corneal biomechanical parameters. CCT was found to be lower in cases with AD than in healthy controls.
